Welcome back, everybody to the marketing rules podcast and today is our Halloween special and it’s my pleasure to welcome back. Liz Lembke who you may remember from ah such podcasts as what recruitment can learn from 80 s movies what podcasts can learn from Christmas movies. And today it’s what podcast or what? Crewman can look can learn from Halloween movies. So exactly I don’t have the rights to kind of like play the Halloween theme, so you know so just have to pretend you’re hearing the theme from Halloween in the background basic. At this point you know? But Liz it’s an absolute pleasure to have you back.
00:37.43
Liz Lembke
I am so ecstatic to be back I feel like we’re building up like the alternative syllabus for you know how to connect recruiting with really great movies and theme songs. So, I.
00:50.16
thinkincircles
Well, we say really great movies, right? You know I mean ah I know both our movie tastes. You know it’s questionable at the best of times right.
00:55.26
Liz Lembke
Um, ah that is true that is terrify. We’re already going into terminology use. Ah.
01:03.38
thinkincircles
Um, and um as you know as I said before we start recording this really is just ah, an excuse for me and you want to have a chat because it’s been a wild record up and um to talk about movies that we kind of like and more really want to review and are just spuriously connecting. Recruitment, right? So, it’s just a bit of fun. Um as opposed to kind of the usually very serious kind of guests. We are podcast and we do on the show. Um, so you know what? So, let’s should we get started before I do for anyone who’s watching the video. Ah, which you know if you are listening to audio version then tune back in you know, follow us and you can kind of. We’ll give you updates on when the videos live. But if you are watching a video. You know what? what Liz is kind of really made the effort today right? as a poem I mean exactly that I mean anyone who knows you though? Liz, I mean.
01:45.56
Liz Lembke
Food torture girl I’m representing what.
01:52.93
thinkincircles
I’m starting to think that that kind of that head wear. You’ve got on literally kind of is actually part of your hair now, right? because every time I see you, you’ve got you’ve got this kind of headgear on. You know it’s part of you.
02:04.95
Liz Lembke
Well, it is because as you know, I’m the Devil’s advocate for talent. Yeah, kicking it off with the miss puns a lot. We’re good. Ah.
02:12.53
thinkincircles
Um, wow, you know? Yeah, exactly. Ah so there you go. So, if you’re watching on the video you get to see this ah amazing kind of headgear and a little bit of makeup as well on there as Well. You know so I know you’ve. Really made the effort as opposed to me who’s in just kind of ah, an old Jumper Basically at this point I’ve made zero effort. They know.
02:33.22
Liz Lembke
Hey, you know I think I recognize your character from scream though.
02:40.49
thinkincircles
Ah, what? what ghost face is that I’ve been called worse it’s fine it’s I’ve been called worse I see you know what? So, let’s crack on so you know, um why don’t you open up with what’s your first movie right? Tell us a little bit about the movie.
02:49.35
Liz Lembke
Ah, no, um side. Um.
02:57.73
Liz Lembke
In here. Yeah.
02:58.57
thinkincircles
Tease us in and then let’s then tell us why it’s um, what is relevance to recruitment you get your notes.
03:04.21
Liz Lembke
Well, I just got to get my little pad from here for the order up. So, for me, 1 of my first ones is the Adams family values because of course which has the great Joan.
03:14.85
thinkincircles
Okay, okay, right? so.
03:23.33
Liz Lembke
And she has this situation where she’s doing a slideshow of her life while everybody everyone else is around seated around the boardroom table um in electric chairs. Um, and she talks about you know here her story she gives her cv about what she wanted and how she had doating parents and you know for Christmas they gave her instead of the ballerina Barbie, they gave her a malibu Barbie and just flipped her lid. Well.
03:53.43
Liz Lembke
And know, she is the wonderful woman who to flip a lid. Um, and for me this aspect of um, everyone sitting around in a boardroom everyone so here like the candidate panel review and talking about this candidate. And the hiring manager saying I wanted the Malibu Barbie I didn’t want the ballerina Barbie how could they so this aspect of you bringing in these amazing candidates. Um, everyone’s kind of in agreement but feeling like they’re an electric chair because this tension of. This is an amazing candidate. Why weren’t they good enough.
04:31.68
thinkincircles
You genuinely given this some thought, and we just wish which is amazing because generally kind of really kind of you know I pulled my notes together. You know, kind of half an hour you know and on space. But you mean you’ve generally given this one and you know that’s an amazing, an amazing point you made.
05:08.49
thinkincircles
Ah, with regards to kind of the Adams family is it Adams family values or Addy the Adams family is it the both of them connected together. We kind of.
05:15.38
Liz Lembke
I think it’s ah the Adams family. It’s the Adams family values that is a that is a fact check. Yeah.
05:16.13
thinkincircles
Yeah, right? The second one the sequel. Yeah, yeah, yeah, um, ah worth going of going back and revisiting. Um, if no one’s kind watch those more. Yeah, and the late is it rouse Julia wasn’t it as ah.
05:26.24
Liz Lembke
Absolutely just to see Angelica Houston as Morticia Adam’s amazing yes excellent yeah absolutely yeah.
05:36.90
thinkincircles
As ah as Gomez. Yeah, who together it was a tour divorce and ah and Christopher Lloyd as um, as yeah you know in there as a brilliant example method exactly? Ah, yeah brilliant I say okay, so.
05:42.29
Liz Lembke
Wonderfully doting husband that won’t die.
05:54.53
thinkincircles
My first one let me give you so it’s number 3 in the ins in ah in a series of movies. Ah, it’s Halloween three season of the which itch which doesn’t really get a huge amount of kind of as much respect as it should be um, one because it doesn’t have Michael Myers in it. It’s kind of doesn’t have um, ah.
05:57.30
Liz Lembke
Moved.
06:05.57
Liz Lembke
Woo. Okay.
06:14.55
thinkincircles
Jamie Lee Curtis in it. It goes off in a completely different tangent basically from all the other movies. Ah which you might see where I’m going with this right? where you know you know is that you know, um in in recruitment I talked to a lot of businesses about the ah the Madonna effect in that basically.
06:26.53
Liz Lembke
In here.
06:30.63
thinkincircles
It’s a good thing to kind of review and change up and switch things up every kind of 5 years know look where you are in your industry look at the industries, you’re serving look at the industries people you’ve got within your business are you doing the right thing should you start looking at moving into contracted.
06:50.36
thinkincircles
And so, my spurious connection with Halloween three season of the which is that they weren’t afraid to make this kind of change up knowing that they’ve already got a successful franchise and they’ve gone a completely changed the format ah new completely new characters completely new kind of storyline completely. Ah, everything completely changed. Only the fact that it’s got the Halloween name attached to it and it was released on the thirty first of October that is the only thing that is kind of got in connection. However, it was a risk they took um, and my feeling is now it’s a cult classic. Okay, you know, however, you know there is there’s ah, there’s an argument to made within business that you need to kind of you know.
07:17.34
Liz Lembke
Yeah, absolutely, that’s a really good point. Yeah.
07:28.75
thinkincircles
Have a review think about making a change and don’t be afraid of making a mistake. Ah, a lot of time you see kind of paralysis within ah recruitment agencies specifically you know, and it can be to be to their detriment because they don’t kind of know where to move next and there’s ah, there’s a fear of kind of making those changes. Um.
07:31.69
Liz Lembke
Um.
07:39.30
Liz Lembke
Now. Yeah.
07:47.39
thinkincircles
So that the makers of Halloween 3 were obviously in that situation. They were made were willing to make that change and ah look at kind of really change it and you know from a personal point of a little bit about a movie if you haven’t seen it. It is worth going back and look at I recently did ah kind of a Halloween marathon from. 1 all the way through to as many as I could kind of get through before kind of before they got to start remaking them up for the for the third or fourth time like kind of that that’s but where I come adopt but Halloween 1 Halloween 2 and Halloween 3 ah from the kind of 70 s and early eighty s definitely worth kind of going back and revisiting their great movies that.
08:12.17
Liz Lembke
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
08:24.35
thinkincircles
Well-directed. They’re well-acted. Um, they’re sure as well. You mean you can get you probably get through all 3 of them in an evening. You know I mean in all honesty you know with a big bucket popcorn exactly, right? Yeah, massive as big bucket of popcorn and the way you go, and you can do with 3 probably in an evening. Ah but they ah.
08:34.20
Liz Lembke
It’s the Jiffy Pop popcorn leg time. Ah.
08:43.73
thinkincircles
But actually, you know it is an underrated movie. Um is Halloween three season another which if it was if it was called anything else. It was made it was made complete if it was just called season the witch and nothing do with Halloween, I think it would be regarded as a better movie but because it’s got the legacy.
08:57.83
Liz Lembke
Yeah, that’s interesting. Yeah, it is. It’s funny. How things get are always drawn in comparison when there are multiples. Yeah, yeah, ah but I love that you know it’s like taking Clayton Christiansen’s like disruptive innovation saying what’s the job to be done and saying okay.
09:01.91
thinkincircles
Yeah, exactly. Okay, so moving into.
09:14.87
Liz Lembke
How can we redefine ourselves of you know, people know the name but then what’s that surprise and what’s that innovation that we’re not falling in love with our goods and services of what is Halloween but saying hey how do we reinvent it.
09:26.39
thinkincircles
And again, I’m just in all just listening to you kind of like you know, plucking names and scenarios out. Yeah amaze. So what? what’s your ah, what’s your second movie is.
09:36.94
Liz Lembke
Um, okay, well my second movie is the witches of Eastwick um, you know we had to do an eighty s classic and so for those of you who don’t remember this. Um, incredibly.
09:40.71
thinkincircles
Okay, yeah, yeah, yeah.
09:54.22
Liz Lembke
Weird movie. Um, it has the wonderful Michelle Pfeiffer it has the wonderful Cher and Susan Sarandon who um, dream up and create a spell for the most handsome man to move to Eastwick.
10:09.97
thinkincircles
Um, and who do they get? um.
10:12.18
Liz Lembke
Ah, they are getting exactly Jack Nicholson I’m like okay this somehow doesn’t exactly compute. But yeah, already alrighty spell of disbelief has been enchanted. Yeah.
10:19.36
thinkincircles
It. But.
10:25.34
Liz Lembke
So, this aspect of 3 incredibly talented women um coming in coming together putting their powers together and then um, creating this perfect man who then turns out to be ah Jack Nicholson who they cannot kill. Um, although they do try to maim and even their dog gets into part of the massive Wax Voodoo doll destruction um so all right now. Liz how are you going to build that bridge.
10:57.68
thinkincircles
Exactly Yeah, but again just waiting for this. Um, you know when I said I was it all Now you know you can do this then I’m in ready to be rest right.
11:00.40
Liz Lembke
Ah, ah so for me okay, taking it to this aspect of vanishing women a great film by Jimmy. That’s going to be coming out soon about how corporate women are fleeing the workplace. Um, and how are we paying attention and paying attention to what’s right in front of our noses here these absolutely fabulous women with skills with abilities with expertise are disappearing from the workplace and there’s no conversation. But the conversation is about the charming devil of you know here? Why isn’t he getting a bigger role. What isn’t he doing so this is a message for me. Also, for hr for recruiting for sourcing as we’re looking at what’s right in front of us. In terms of talent and seeing how they’re vanishing and not getting the opportunities and not being promoted etc. It’s that aspect of how we are blinded by the devil who’s charming who’s right in front of us.
11:59.59
thinkincircles
Um.
12:15.59
Liz Lembke
And ignoring the talents and the beauties of the witches that are in the corporate space.
12:21.46
thinkincircles
Wow You know an allegory for diversity you know I mean that’s ah you know you know that was that was well put. Ah yeah, and a good point, right? Um, and it’s kind of ah you know it’s been the kind of hot topic really for the kind of last few years.
12:28.26
Liz Lembke
Will.
12:35.25
thinkincircles
How we can just increase diversity generally within kind of businesses especially within recruitment and the and the businesses that recruiters work with you know there’s you know the lack of kind of diversity within you know it space and the kind of engineering space and those kinds of spaces. Are all kind of really um, kind of people making some real kind of Headway in those, but you know still a lot of kind of room for manoeuvre and road kind of a lot of things that need to be done. Um, and yeah, I never thought of wit the witches of Eastwick as ah as an allegory and for Diversity. So ah, thank you That was ah that was great.
12:52.10
Liz Lembke
Um, and yeah.
13:10.72
thinkincircles
Right for my next spurious connection. You’re going to see a slight theme right with these because as ah, as a as a man as a you know as a middle-aged kind of white man, I’ve got a certain kind of kind of style of thing of movie obviously growing up in the 80 s has completely affected me. Um, and so.
13:25.85
Liz Lembke
In a positive way. James.
13:28.97
thinkincircles
Well yeah, well you know we’ll let the listeners kind of decide on that once they’ve had this know so the next up is one of my all-time favourite movies. Um, ah, which is the thing. Okay, which is John Carpenter actually to give it John Carpenter the thing if we’re going to go for the ah.
13:47.69
thinkincircles
If you haven’t watched it. It is an absolute classic. Ah one it’s beautifully made. It’s beautifully shot. It’s well directed. It’s got a great script. It is actually a remake of the thing from another world from the from the 50 s which an old black and white movie. Um.
14:07.20
Liz Lembke
Huh did not know that.
14:08.33
thinkincircles
And ah it is about an alien that is able to mimic and copy humans and so you don’t know who’s the alien you don’t know who’s the human um and it’s kind of hits ah kind of an isolated group of ums. Ah, kind of scientists in a kind of in in the kind of Arctic circle. Basically, there’s no way of them and it gets very intense very close It’s very centrophobic um and to this day the special effects being practical special acts are absolutely brilliant and stunning. They look still look amazing. Um. And I’ve ever got it with me now. But as I’ve proven on um, previous podcasts as a man who likes to toy got, I’ve actually got a yeah, a kind of ah a kind of an action figure of Kurt Russell as McCreadie from the thing just.
14:52.20
Liz Lembke
I Can’t wait. Ah.
15:02.10
thinkincircles
Just over there which are I’m not goanna bring up on because you know but I have got this as well. But you know the thing able to kind of copy and so we’re always we’re going to kind of go down spearing around kind of copying and representation and what is when is it good to kind of ah to look to your peers for. You know inspiration or when is it not good touch your path or inspiration and is it always good to kind of you know if those guys over there are doing it. Well, we get this a lot in Marketing. You know what our competitors are doing you know we should be doing that. Um, when it’s really well they’re doing that, we should do something but better.
15:24.33
Liz Lembke
Um, yeah.
15:29.29
Liz Lembke
Yeah, yeah, I’m sure. Yeah.
15:38.94
thinkincircles
Okay, we don’t want to be copying them because we want to own this space I talk to my team and my and our clients all the time around now own the space you’re in um and do your own thing and be unique. This is one of my again if you’ve ever seen me present, I get its unique uniqueness thing stop trying to be the biggest and the best and try and be unique.
15:41.10
Liz Lembke
Um, yeah.
15:51.68
Liz Lembke
It’s so yeah, it’s so true. Yeah, well yep.
15:56.76
thinkincircles
Um, and don’t be like the thing kind of going around and copying your kind of your peers because you’re you all, you’re always going be playing catchup in that kind of in that sense. Um, and that’s really kind of a you know as much be kind of ah, a recruitment marketing kind of perspective you know is it. Get asked to do this kind of competitor analysis and it was like well yeah, we can do it. We don’t mind doing it for information as long as it’s not to sit there and kind of copy What those guys are doing So okay, those guys have got ah those guys are doing a podcast. We must do a podcast as Well. Those guys doing this?? Um, and you’re on ah on a route to nowhere because you’re always going to be kind of on the back Foot. You’re always going to be watching them for what they do.
16:16.21
Liz Lembke
Will who.
16:26.10
Liz Lembke
Yeah, yeah.
16:34.20
thinkincircles
And eventually you just get and be known for the guys that are kind of doing it same as those guys over there but just not as good and kind of you know, do something you do ah own that space exactly um and that’s how I have kind of ah you know hesitantly and very thinly connected.
16:39.17
Liz Lembke
Yeah, yeah, yeah, the copycat Stopford is of marketing. Yep.
16:53.55
thinkincircles
Ah, the thing John Carpenter is the thing to you know what? you should be doing and how you should kind of react against your peers and the kind of work that they’re putting out there. The things they’re putting out there and what you should or shouldn’t do so yeah. Okay.
17:04.80
Liz Lembke
I Love it I Love it. Oh yeah, it’s true and that’s a really good point of you know I’m going to make a pun you’re ready for it. So next Horror movie Nonfatty We want to avoid vampire marketing so that.
17:11.72
thinkincircles
So go free.
17:21.15
thinkincircles
Ah, likes like it’s one mind it. It literally is like 1 mind.
17:22.74
Liz Lembke
That the message doesn’t get lost in terms of your hook and at the same time Exactly like you said that it’s just not copying the thing that you know you’re doing it as well does not as good and so it’s not remarkable in any way shape or form because it’s not unique. To say what’s your what’s your unique awesome Sauce. What’s your unique value proposition that you as a you know recruiting agency really bring to the world and that you as the marketing team can really say Okay, let’s speak to that because that will make a huge difference.
17:58.65
thinkincircles
Yeah, exactly I couldn’t put it better myself exactly? um so to talk to me give me and let’s have another movie from you Liz.
18:06.63
Liz Lembke
Um, okay, ah all right I mean I couldn’t bring it in if we were you know here. So, there’s two I’m going to go first probably with Beetlejuice. Um, so this is the scene with Wynona Ryder where Beetlejuice is stuck in a little miniature house, and he wants to get out and so he’s trying to connive and.
18:38.13
Liz Lembke
Scheme because he can’t say his own name and so he’s figuring out ways for her to say it 3 times so that he can be released back into the world because Gina Davis and was that Baldwin who was crazy. Yeah, um, you know they trapped him and so.
18:47.45
thinkincircles
It is Alec Baldwin yeah, yeah,
18:56.13
Liz Lembke
I think Beetlejuice and recruiting. There are so many I mean where do we and it’s rich pickings exactly from you know they’re arriving in and not having an appointment and then yeah.
19:00.18
thinkincircles
Um, yeah, it’s rich pickings I think right.
19:13.92
Liz Lembke
And having to go through everyone else so here this aspect of um here the temptation of you know you want this job I’m going to tell you what you need to know? um and that hesitation of um, maybe I need to speak to Barbara. So, who is that Barbara that you feel like you’re being talked into something that you really don’t want to do um and how are you taking a step back to say okay maybe I need to have a different consideration. Why are we being forced to. To take this job to take this candidate Whatever it may be where are those times when you actually need to take a step back and say okay here who is this bar but what do we need to talk to 2 to say is this is a right decision is this the path we want to go down on is this the path we want to commit to.
20:03.31
thinkincircles
Again, I mean it’s just a joy to kind of to hear you kind of connect all these dots together and’ but it’s brilliant. Um, yeah, I mean it’s a good point, right? You know, um, you know there’s not much more I concern around it. You made you made it. So ah, the movie itself I mean again, a classic. Um, some great stars in it well directed obviously Tim Burton movie um there’s been doubting that there’s going to be a sequel you know legacy I guess it would be a legacy sequel these days. You know I mean they’re kind of an older. We’d have to call on Beetlejuice to come back for some reason something I don’t know. But there is there has been kind of talk of it of a sequel. But again, if you haven’t seen it for, I am a brilliant movie, right? is so it’s so well done. Yeah, yeah, it’s so well done. Um, and if you imagine that the time this kind of matter you know you’d never seen anything like this before it was funny. It was funny. It had a genuine heart to it.
20:43.35
Liz Lembke
It really is yeah, it’s very nuanced.
20:53.47
Liz Lembke
So true. Yeah, and yeah, yeah.
20:58.60
thinkincircles
Um, and it was scary at times it was kind of weird Gary and again some great practical effects which I’m a big fan of um and ah an absolutely kind of ah knockout performance by Michael Keaton who obviously went on then to get to be Batman based on this starring in Beetlejuice. Both Tim Burton movies and hence why they kind of you know it exactly? Um, so I’ve got another 2 and I’m just going to pick one and I’m deciding on which one to go for and I’m going to go for the fly from 1986
21:29.23
Liz Lembke
Now.
21:38.27
Liz Lembke
Oh wow, its Jeff course going? yeah.
21:40.52
thinkincircles
David Kortenberg ah movie with ah with the amazing Jeff Goldblum and Gina Davis um obviously based on the and ah, kind of again an ah 50 s kind of black and white movie that was um, that was with Vincent price. Um before I get into that I’m going to tell you? ah.
21:59.25
Liz Lembke
Um.
22:00.27
thinkincircles
Ah, quite of an embarrassing story from my childhood about the fly the old version with Vincent price. Okay so I was watching this as I was ah as a as a kid, I probably was kind of 5 or 6 something why my parents had decided to let me watch it.
22:04.85
Liz Lembke
Okay, please pray tell.
22:16.20
Liz Lembke
I walked in on the poulter guys I asked myself the same question.
22:16.14
thinkincircles
You know old horror movie I’m not why I was watching this is this is the old version. So, it’s pretty. It’s pretty tame you know, but you know there’s a scene right near the end where ah, the kind of running up to this the premise is obviously Vincent. Price has kind of.
22:25.69
Liz Lembke
On.
22:35.67
thinkincircles
S what part of his body with a fly. So, there’s a half man half fly version of him walking around. So, it’s Vincent price with a fly head on basically now for the majority of the movie. But also, there is a tiny little fly with a Vincent price head on somewhere as well now yeah and right at the end of the movie.
22:50.67
Liz Lembke
Oh really? ah.
22:52.98
thinkincircles
Ah, it’s kind of in almost what would now be classes like an end credit scene. You see this fly with Vincent price’s head caught in a web with a spider or wandering towards him and he’s kind of going help me help. Okay, this had a bit of an effect on the young James basically. It pretty much going to scare the living be Jesus out of me. Ah, which what my amazing mother decided to play upon in the middle of the night ah coming into my room in my bedroom.
23:23.34
Liz Lembke
It’s so kind so kind of think the hazing starts early in the James. Ah.
23:28.99
thinkincircles
Kind of just after I just start to fall asleep and saying through the door without me help me help me basically and to continuing to scare the living daylights out of me for the rich for the rest of the evening because knowing you know So yeah, I know my mom probably doesn’t listen this. But yeah, I you know that’s a story I can’t I often tell.
23:33.10
Liz Lembke
You know.
23:47.56
thinkincircles
Um, so I thank her for kind of exactly yeah exactly. But back to the um back to the kind of ah the night and a 6 version of the fly again similar premise but kind of more of a kind of a body horror you know in a David Cron and Burke kind of style again.
23:50.13
Liz Lembke
Yeah, exactly damaging early. Ah.
24:04.79
thinkincircles
1 of these movies. That’s very claustrophobic you know for most of the movie is basically just ah Jeff Goldblum and Gina Davis in this kind of a loft apartment dealing with the fact that he’s slowly turning into a fly after trying to kind of crack teleportation and a little fly kind of wanders into his teleportation pod and. He becomes Hanna half man offline and again it’s kind of for me this kind of this this reimagining and revisioning and kind of reviewing kind of what you are how you’re working as opposed to what I originally talked around hallway and three you know I mean you’ve got to be gotten. You got to get it right? Otherwise, you do become this kind of this this monster that is um, kind of. Ousted and you can’t kind of always kind of you didn’t start to kind of lose control of it. So yeah, as opposed to the kind of the flip side of the season the which kind of argument you got to be sure that what your kind of doing when you are making these changes that you are going that you are kind of doing them smartly ah because it can kind of obviously.
24:44.15
Liz Lembke
Um, yeah.
24:59.73
Liz Lembke
Yeah, um.
25:01.50
thinkincircles
Adversely affect your business and taking kind of you know in a in a in a new Coca-Cola kind of style you know you could turn a lot of people off right? You know this new kind of new recipe could really be the thing that kind of actually kind of destroys you as a part as ah as opposed to ah, kind of pushes you into the stratosphere and you know obviously.
25:08.60
Liz Lembke
Yeah.
25:20.49
thinkincircles
We talk to businesses about this all the time around kind of repositioning themselves and reimagining themselves and rebranding themselves and how you go around this how you go about this. You know what you do around the kind of legacy brands. How do you kind of reflect that legacy proposition. The people that you know the kind of that the clients.
25:22.93
Liz Lembke
Move.
25:32.70
Liz Lembke
How.
25:38.14
thinkincircles
Who you used to deal with when you were kind of 1 thing and now, you’re moving into another and how you make that kind of transition and all the things you need to think about when you are considering going down this route now obviously businesses kind of have to re kind of refocus and reposition and market forces. Do this just generally kind of the economics kind of do this.
25:53.33
Liz Lembke
No.
25:56.56
thinkincircles
Growth affects these kinds of things but the things that can’t be kind of just almost left to chance that you need to kind of really kind of plan out. Um and it’s not this is not an over ever advert for my business, but it needs to be kind of really carefully considered and you need kind of expert help in those kinds of senses that trying to kind of figure out and kind of thrash around in the dark. And suddenly you’ve kind of become half man half fly probably isn’t you know isn’t the right way to kind of go about it. You know I mean you’ve kind of got lots of expertise out there. You know from you know from me and my business to you and your business. You know there are people out there that who can kind of help and guide you along this kind of ah these changes you need to go Through. Don’t.
26:27.10
Liz Lembke
Um, yeah.
26:35.23
thinkincircles
Necessarily always be kind of arrogant to think and that that you’ve kind of got it all fixed yourself because within recruitment we’ve got a lot of bulls to kind of to juggle right? You know we are to our you know we’ve got candidate someone So we’re B Two B and B Two C all at the same time.
26:42.44
Liz Lembke
True enough. Yeah.
26:49.80
thinkincircles
Um, unlike a lot of other kind of industries where it’s can only focus on one. They’re only consumer- facing or only business- facing with us We we’re both so you’ve got a lot of kind of ah potential audiences that you can kind of really disenfranchise quite quickly if you kind of make the right The wrong decisions. Um as opposed to a lot of other kind of types of Business. So ah, one of these things that I think that we starting to kind of see a lot more of that people are starting to kind of ask for a bit more help when they’re kind of going down. They realize they need to make this change, so you know look to the right people to help you make that change.
27:22.69
Liz Lembke
Ah, yeah, Absolutely I Love it. Yeah, and don’t just go with all right I looked in the phone book but really look to who’s going to be a good matching for what your business and proposition is where you’d like to go and who are you truly partnering with. As you look to what that transformation could mean that you actually are speaking a language where you understand each other now.
27:43.14
thinkincircles
Exactly Um, so have you got any other movies is there anything else you want to? Okay, Okay, okay, all right? Okay, let’s hear this like this How yeah, we are. We are yeah.
27:47.94
Liz Lembke
Well, the only the final one. The final one I would have to bring in would be hunger games again. We’re stretching. We’re stretching a little bit. So yeah.
28:00.81
thinkincircles
Ah, so.
28:01.48
Liz Lembke
So, for me, one of the hungers because otherwise you know food could truck girl would not make sense if we didn’t have like Hunger Games. Yeah, so the scene I want to bring in is so Katniss you know it’s that how are we you know going on to that next level.
28:06.54
thinkincircles
Yeah, yeah.
28:19.48
Liz Lembke
And she is waiting to go in to shoot her arrows she wants into this her name gets called out. There’s this huge empty room. Um, with basically the targets on one and then 5 arrows and then um. And then a bow and then up and above. There’s the management. Um, basically there’s everyone having a nice board meeting there and she goes in, and she takes her first shot, and her first shot goes wide. Um, so it doesn’t hit the target directly in the head. It goes off to the side and so she thinks and considers and then takes the next bow and then she gets a bull’s-eye directly in the heart only after she made her first mistake people had then looked after she said hello, I’m Katniss. Thank you for having me they paid attention to the first shot the second shot she made nobody was paying attention. They were all chatting glad hugging doing all those things and so she said Well she gave it a look and then she took her next arrow, and she shot it directly. Into the pig’s mouth and caught the Apple and the Apple then went onto the wall, and they all turned around shocked and then she said thank you I appreciate you for your consideration and then seen.
29:47.94
Liz Lembke
Next scene she was getting yelled at why did you do that? This could have destroyed all our chances This is going to be horrible for you and then but up. Ah, she wins with the highest number of points. Okay, so what is what are the lessons learned then also for recruiting. Oftentimes you know here you come in people aren’t really paying attention or they over evaluate like a mistake or something that didn’t go wrong with your career like okay we’re looking at your Cv. Why do you have this hole here. What happened?? Um, and all the other accomplishments and what you do and what you’ve done after that. People aren’t paying attention to those. They’re just looking at what went wrong. So, what do you do have to do as a candidate you have to surprise and also put in your foot there so that you get noticed because that will make a difference, So This is that kind of play. Do yeah to say. How are you making sure that you and your personality shine through to catch the attention.
30:48.99
thinkincircles
Yeah, amazing and it’s a great point. Um, as from the other side from ah, kind of as agencies and recruiters. We appreciate someone who makes it makes it makes them makes themselves stand out. Okay, um, it’s becoming more and more kind of difficult.
30:51.18
Liz Lembke
Are.
30:59.31
Liz Lembke
Yeah, yeah.
31:06.88
thinkincircles
Ah, in in the kind of economic situation with lots of people employed and lots of kind of empty jobs to try and find the right people. Um and try and fight the right kind of talent So people who can kind make themselves stand out forever. However, means we were always reading about these kinds of things online around someone who kind of would.
31:18.90
Liz Lembke
Now.
31:24.48
thinkincircles
You know stand outside a certain business ah with a billboard or something stand that they were looking for work and you know they took that extra step to kind of and then they finally got a job. Um, those kinds of things do work those so that kind of show initiative and there’s nothing ever wrong with showing some initiative, especially as a candidate to try and kind of get a.
31:32.14
Liz Lembke
Um, not.
31:38.39
Liz Lembke
Yep.
31:42.70
thinkincircles
And ah merely this is probably for the people who are just trying to start to get on the job ladder or trying to get a specific job. Um, you don’t really see it kind of once you kind of make it more kind of senior. But if you know if you are just kind of new into the Jobs Market you know trying to kind of build yourself a brand your personal brand. We talk around this all the kind of thing all the kind of time you know.
31:45.55
Liz Lembke
For her.
31:56.43
Liz Lembke
Yeah.
31:59.65
thinkincircles
Ah, understanding kind of how you’re perceived by the people who you want to who you want to employ you can make a real difference and if you can kind of bring that to the forefront and show them your kind of personality you know and you know more and more these days you know businesses are hiring on skills and not experienced. So, if you’ve got the right kind of skills. You’ll will be. You’ll be considered for these jobs. So, you know, showing off that kind of showing off that kind of initiative I think ah you know everybody you appreciate that. So ah, like another great point. Um I’ve got 1 more movie but just because I just wanted to mention it because.
32:29.40
Liz Lembke
Um, awesome.
32:35.92
thinkincircles
It’s a great movie and is again. It’s one of these ones that everybody should watch at some point I have 0 idea how however how it’s kind of yeah, I have 0 idea I’ve got some I’ve got very kind of loose connections. But even then, is probably just more embarrassing than the thing.
32:45.19
Liz Lembke
Ah I love it. We’re plugging a film I Love it.
32:53.85
thinkincircles
So, it’s dawn of the dead from 1978 the George Romero ah kind of version, which is you know far, you know it’s the continuation of his kind of the dead series. Um, and it is the very famous one that’s set in the supermarket and the in the kind of shopping mall. The kind of.
32:56.12
Liz Lembke
Okay.
33:10.28
thinkincircles
The kind of lonely shopping mall surrounded by zombies and a kind of ah a ragtag band of kind of survivors group kind of kind of holed up in this ah in this shopping mall. Um, and ah eventually one by 1 they all kind of get kind of consumed and. But it’s ah again, it’s an allegory for consumer culture. You’ve kind of got images of the zombie’s kind of like lumbering through kind of department stores and pretending to kind of live their previous lives by grabbing hold of things that seem kind of familiar and that kind of thing as well as being ah just a damn good.
33:28.88
Liz Lembke
Now.
33:44.30
thinkincircles
Zombie movie all at the same time I Just want to mention it because it’s damned. It’s a good movie and I was looking through some inspirations for kind of for Halloween movies This one crops on us like yeah, that’s a good movie. You know if anything I could connect it to um into kind of recruitment and recruiter marketing is that we don’t do enough around satire.
34:03.65
Liz Lembke
Yeah, good point.
34:03.86
thinkincircles
You know, making taking the kind of inward reviewing us and doing enough of that and um, you know trying to see the kind of lighter side of what we do. We’re getting better at it. Um, but it is again. 1 of those things that sometimes people are quite afraid of doing especially if you’re kind of.
34:10.40
Liz Lembke
Now.
34:23.89
thinkincircles
Where you sit within the recruitment chain if you’re recruiting kind of senior people you know, making kind of fun of yourself and satire can tend to be ah, completely off the books but it’s something we kind of probably need to do more of in a world where we’re looking more around our kind of mental health and understand and of being more kind of conscious of this kind of thing you know.
34:34.33
Liz Lembke
No goodness. Absolutely yeah, yep.
34:43.21
thinkincircles
Having a review and taking a piss out of ourselves and seeing the funny side of what we sometimes do not in a cruel way but more of kind of satire satirical way like dawn the dead does on consumer culture I don’t think is necessarily a bad thing that I mean is the thinnest connection to recruitment ever. However, I want to get it in. So yeah.
35:04.43
Liz Lembke
I Love it. Well and I think you know to that aspect of you know, considering all the candidates as zombies and just going along and that they’ll want to do what they had done before rather than how are we having a rethink as to. Ah, you know people have a lot of potentials. Not just what they used to do. What can they do? ah.
35:22.00
thinkincircles
See That’s why you’re on here. Let’s see the immediately act to you’ve picked up exactly why dawn of the dead should be on this list and how and what I should have said as opposed to something kind of ridiculous around satire. Um.
35:37.67
Liz Lembke
It also um, as so okay, 2 follow-ups to that. So, satire is important. So, I do have a fly dish for you. Um I do have to that point a zombie for you.
35:47.80
thinkincircles
I Can do.
35:50.73
Liz Lembke
So, you know we must have humour when we’re when we’re going about this because we’re you know we’re drinking the tequila we’re drinking the tea when we’re when we’re talking about recruitment marketing and about how do we really make those impacts and so if we can build those bridges. We’re good to go.
36:05.44
thinkincircles
You know again, this is why this is why you get invited back over and over again this because you know these little nuggets are priceless. Um, because you know I think we’ve kind of come to the end of ah end of the show. Ah again, always a pleasure to have you on Board. If at some point, we can think of another reason to kind of like to connect recruitment with old movies I will damn well we kind of think of it. You know I think I think we’re going to be scraping a bottle about if we get to Easter movies and things like that.
36:36.10
Liz Lembke
Well, you know, um, ah Ralphie and a Christmas story could make a comeback. You know there’s always an opportunity for an easter suit to come in.
36:41.76
thinkincircles
Yeah, and one of the things I even if we can have, I know when we’ve both got a bit of ah, ah, a love of kind of Charlie Brown and kind of you know and that there is a Charlie Brown ah Halloween kind of cartoon right? as kind of Halloween and it are Charlie Brown and the pumpkin or something like that right.
36:50.30
Liz Lembke
Absolutely.
36:58.78
Liz Lembke
The great pumpkin I got a rock Oh my goodness. Oh, you have to see it. Okay, all right final like a snippet of movie and recruiting So all of the kids are going out and they’re getting candy.
36:59.60
thinkincircles
Which I thought about I’ve never seen it so I can like I’ve never seen it so I couldn’t bring it, but I’ve never seen it.
37:14.33
Liz Lembke
Lucy complains that she has to get candy for her stupid brother Linus is who was waiting on the great pumpkin and poor Charlie Brown you know every time he goes to a house. He looks into his bag, and he doesn’t have anything else but a rock I got a rock. And so, this aspect of you can do everything like everybody else and for some reason your reward and remuneration. It just got a rock.
37:36.25
thinkincircles
You got a rock. Um, again, you know that’s what we hit. That’s all we can give having you back, right? So, I’m sure this won’t be the last time this won’t be the last time. Um, we we’ll figure out another kind of ah we’ll figure out another kind of movie genre to connect to ah to recruitment. But for now.
37:41.56
Liz Lembke
Ah, understood the assignment.
37:53.30
thinkincircles
Ah, Liz thank you very much.
37:53.97
Liz Lembke
Thank you, James, always a pleasure happy Halloween.
